Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the Sheehan School.  When the school opened in the 1948-49 school year, it was called the Pond Plain School and housed twelve classrooms and a combination library, gym, and cafeteria.  In 1968 a two floor addition was joined onto the building, and eight classrooms along with a full size gym and cafeteria were added.  Pond Plain School was renamed in 1975 in honor of William E. Sheehan, a Westwood Police Officer killed in the line of duty. Over the years Sheehan School has housed a variety of populations ranging in grades 1-6, 7-8, K-5, 3-6, and 2-5.  Since the reorganization of all elementary schools in 2001, it has remained a K-5 school.

Life at Sheehan School is very busy.  Our child-centered mission seeks to develop in all students basic academic competencies, higher order thinking skills, a love for reading, self-discipline, and moral responsibility.  To assist in these goals parents, staff, and community members play an active role.   The PTA has a long standing record of loyalty and support for academic endeavors and curriculum enrichment.  The School Site Council develops a yearly School Improvement Plan to promote growth in areas of the curriculum, staff development, technology, and safety.  The school’s leadership committee is comprised of staff members who plan for and uphold a vision of academic excellence and social-emotional well being.  A Child Study Team suggests strategies to teachers for student learning and social skills, and an Incident Management Team focuses on ensuring the safety of all.  Last and most important of all is an active Student Council to model the expectations embedded in our school’s Core Values: respect, responsibility, a love of learning, thinking skills, and effective communication.

As each new year arrives, our student body becomes more diverse.  This presents more opportunities for all of us to learn about other cultures and customs, making for an enriched school community and curriculum.  On behalf of the entire Sheehan staff you are welcome to join us in our adventures in learning so that together we can take pride in supporting our school motto, “Watch Us Soar.
